On November 14, 2024, Batho Clinic in Mangaung Metro District, Free State Province, welcomed the United States Consular General, Stephanie Bunce. This significant visit was organised to witness the remarkable achievements of the USAID-funded ACCELERATE 2 TB programme, underscoring the vital partnership between the U.S. and South Africa in combating tuberculosis (TB) in the region.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Ms. J Ramakau, Batho Clinic Facility Manager, followed by formal introductions by Ms. BS Ramodula, Chief Director: Special Programmes. The attendees were then treated to detailed presentations by Dr. Thato Mosidi from THINK and Ms. Ramakau, who highlighted the clinic’s efforts and the broader scope of the bilateral TB programming.
Dr. Mosidi and Ms. Ramakau provided insights into the clinic’s successes in TB screening, prevention, and treatment. They emphasised innovative approaches, such as the Digital Mobile X-ray Unit, which was demonstrated during the visit. This unit represents a significant advancement in TB care, allowing for more efficient and accurate diagnosis.
The highlight of the visit was a tour of the facility, where Consular General Bunce observed firsthand the implementation of TB testing and treatment interventions. The session concluded with remarks from the Consular General, who expressed her gratitude for the dedication of healthcare workers and reinforced the U.S. commitment to addressing the TB epidemic. The Free State MEC for Health, Mr. Viceroy Mahlatsi, also thanked the staff and THINK for their unwavering commitment to promoting good health and improving the lives of the community.
Dr. Thato Mosidi remarked, “The collaboration between the U.S. and South Africa through the ACCELERATE 2 TB programme has been instrumental in advancing our efforts to combat TB. The support and innovative solutions have significantly enhanced our ability to screen, prevent, and treat TB effectively.”
The visit, which brought together key stakeholders from the Free State Department of Health, THINK, and USAID, concluded with a group photo to commemorate the day. It marked a pivotal step in strengthening health collaborations to combat TB in South Africa.
